The Way of the Desert…a note from Sandy Alwine
“For as long as I can remember, there has been an overwhelming attraction to desert landscapes. This love was there even before my very first direct experience. Since then I have explored the rich deserts of the Southwest and the foreboding Outback of Australia.
In the desert, there is a grandeur, a palpable energy veiled in mystery, a vastness of land and sky, a distant horizon, and a sense of timelessness that leaves one in breathless wonder. For many persons, there is an unquenchable desire to know its secrets, but it does not give itself easily to being known, so one is often left in a quest of unknowing.
Our life journey is laced with many desert experiences. Losses of loved family members and friends, ravaging diseases, failings that threaten to extinguish the lives we are pursuing. These also are desert landscapes begging for new births, new visions that can raise us above our deadening illusions.
Somehow in desert landscapes and our inner landscapes, the soul is invited to respond to the grace of Divine Love from whence we have come.
The retreat format will be a gentle flow of silence and solitude, guided prayer experiences, and times for reflection. Days apart from the routine of daily life are like seekers of God going into the desert space to listen, to notice, and to attend to subtle movements of the Spirit.”
